  • What is COLONSCOPY?

    The term colonoscopy means looking inside the colon. It is a procedure performed by a Endoscopist, a well trained subspecialist.

    The colon is the last portion of your digestive tract. Its starts at the ceacum which is attached to the end of small intestine and ends an anus.       Colon is a hollow tube which is 5 feet long and main function is to store unabsorbed food.

    Colonoscope is a long thin, flexible tube with a tiny video camera and light on the end. By adjusting various controls of the colonoscope. The       Endoscopist can guide in any direction to look inside the colon. The high quality picture from colonoscope is shown on TV monitor and gives       detailed clear view. It is more précised than X-ray.
  • Who should undergo colonoscopy?

    Colonoscopy is a safe an effective way to evaluate problems such as blood loss, pain, changes in bowel habits. Colonoscopy can also be used to       identify and treat active bleeding from the bowel. It has enabled us to diagnose various pathologies such as inflammation, ulceration, stricture,       growth, diverticulosis, polyposis and angiodysplasia.

    It is a important way to check for colon cancer and to treat colon polyps. Colonoscopy is often used to remove polyps, a technique called       polypectomy.
  • What is the preparation for the Colonoscopy?

    First of all, give a complete list of all the medicine you are taking a well as any allergies you have to drugs or other substances.

    Regardless of the reason for colonoscopy there are important steps you can take, to prepare and participate in the procedure.

    Let your doctor know if you have any heart, lung or other medical conditions that may need special attention before during and after       colonoscopy.

    You will be given introduction in advanced that will outline what you should and should not do in preparation. One vary critical step is to       thoroughly clean out colon, which for many can be most tiring part of the exam. It is essential that you complete this step carefully because, how      well the bowel is emptied will determined the success of the procedure. Various methods have been used to clean the bowel. What we used is      colopeg of which once sachet taken in one liter of water from morning 5.30 to 8.00 am on the day of procedure. Patient should not consume any       thing after 8.00 am till colonoscopy.

    It can be done or either in patient or outpatient basis depending upon the indication and procedure. You will be asked to sign a consent form for       the procedure. It there is anything you do not understand asked for more information. Get a family member or friend to accompany you for the       procedure.
  • What can you expect during the colonoscopy?

    During the procedure, everything will be done to ensure your comfort. The procedure can performed either under local anesthesia or sedative       which will make you relax and drowsy, thus preventing you from remembering much of experience. Your blood pressure, pulse and oxygen level       in your blood will be carefully monitor.

    Once you are fully relaxed, your doctor will do a rectal examination with a gloved, lubricated finger and then the lubricated colonoscope will be       inserted.

    As the scope is advanced into the colon you may feel the need to move your bowel. You may feel some cramping or fullness. Generally however,       there is little or no discomfort.
  • What can you expect after the Colonoscopy?

    After OGD Scopy you will be shifted to recovery room if you are sedated. In case you are not sedated you comfortably can walk out for endoscopy      suit. The decision is made whether you will be admitted or discharged depending upon the OGD Scopy findings and procedure performed.

    In case admission is required patient is shifted to the ward were nurse will instruct you in the ward regarding the oral intake and the diet. Other      set of patients who are for discharged on day care basis, kept in recovery for 4 hours. Once patient is full alert some oral fluids can be started.       When patient feel stronger and alert to go home, he can be sent home. Doctor will advise you regarding the findings and treatment for you. You       take rest at home for the remainder of the day. Have a family member or friend to take you home.

    Occasionally, minor problems may persist such as: bloating, gas or mild cramping.

    These symptoms should disappear in 24 hours or less.

  • What are post colonoscopy orders to be followed?

    You have to remain fasting for 4 hours. Depending upon the need and type of procedure performed, your fasting status may be prolonged. Once fasting period is over then you will be starting with small quantity of clear liquids. In case you are not vomiting or having any discomfort, you will be allowed to take liquids and subsequently solid foods after 6-8 hours. Your treatment will by explained by the doctor.
